A Collection of Crime Data

We have been mapping out the landscape for crime data in the UK and the list of sources for England and Wales we have come across is below.  We don’t pretend this is comprehensive or 100% accurate (e.g. some references are to specific time data from a couple of months ago) so if you have any additions/corrections please make them by comment to this post.

A central initiative has been announced by the Home Secretary for all Police forces to produce some crime maps by December of this year. We hope this initiative will deliver some good results.  While innovation by anyone else who has ideas about how best to present and mash crime data would be helpful in this process.

Kudos to Cambs for having one, but it’s a shame it’s so buggy. You can see on the first page that it has the Y2K bug – it thinks it’s the year 108. That wasn’t the only problem last time I tried it – the query engine was very flakey, kept giving error messages. Maybe that’s been fixed by now. But anyway, hopefully when you standardise on one codebase, it won’t be that one!

  2. Your Hampshire entries give the impression that data’s only available for Winchester and the New Forest. In fact it’s available for the whole county – see http://www.hantsiowcaddie.gov.uk/ .

  3. How do you get involved in suggesting ways of mashing up crime stats?

  4. Wouldn’t it be great if they released the data as a reliable feed and let others build better web interfaces? Most of them are frustrating to use in some way – why for instance can’t you see all the areas of West Midlands in comparison to each other? It’s great you can see detail in each Ward, but try comparing one Ward to another… If they made the data easily available, we could map West Midlands (and the whole of the UK) like this one we did for the Belfast Telegraph http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/nicrimemap/
